Arts-and-Entertainment Novello Theatre was built at a time when theatres were at a boom in London. Numerous of them were erected in the period as independent ones, in pairs and in twins. Novello was one such venue that was built as a pair along with the Aldwych Theatre. Both these structures were designed by W.G.R. Sprague and the Waldorf hotel stood between both the houses. The venue opened on 22nd May 1905 and was called the Waldorf Theater but after a short-while, in 1909 it was called the Strand. In 1911, its name was changed again to Whitney but in 1911, it was renamed as the Strand Theatre. Its current name was given by its present owners in 2005 after Ivor Novello show resided in one of the flats above the venue between the period of 1913 and 1951. The first successful show to be hosted at the Novello was Arsenic and old Lace. The show opened here during 1940s and enjoyed run of 1337 performances. Similar success was repeated by Sailor Beware! that ran for 1231 performances in 1955. On the day of American president John F. Kennedys assassination, a musical by Stephen Sondheim called A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum made its debut here and went on to enjoy two years of grand run. The house was almost rebuilt firstly in 1930 and then later in 1970s. The venue celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2005 and underwent extensive refurbishment in the same period. A Grade II listed theatre venue, Novello can currently ac.modate 1,105 audiences at a time. When the venue opened on 8th December 2005, shows for Royal Shakespeare .pany were hosted here. Shows like Twelfth Night, The .edy of Errors, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and As You Like It were hosted here during the four week period the production enjoyed here. West End premiere of Footloose was hosted at Novello in 2006. The music starred Cheryl Baker and when its run .menced, the royal Shakespeare .pany made its return to the venue. On 6th June 2007, the venue hosted all European premier of The Drowsy Chaperone. Notable theatre artists like Elaine Paige, Bob Martin, Summer Strallen and John Partridge wooed audiences here with their spectacular appearances in the show. The musical .edy, Mamma Mia was transferred at the Novello Theatre in September 2012. The show has been written by British playwright Catherine Johnson. The show features some of the greatest hits of ABBA and the title of the musical has been taken from their most popular number that topped the charts in 1975. An immensely successful musical, the show has been wooing theatregoers in London over a decade now.
